Houseboating with a pet

Good to know

Taking your pet on a houseboat? This may seem absurd at first, but why not? Perhaps you doubt that your pet will feel comfortable in a mobile home? In this case we can reassure you, because with our boats you travel at a maximum of 15 km/h, so that your dog, for example, can hold its nose into the wind without any major problems.

The lower speed also means that the noise level from the motor is not too high and does not damage your pet’s ears. Another advantage of a houseboat vacation is that you usually sail close to the shore or even from harbor to harbor – so you can plan your own extensive tours. If you are considering not calling at a port regularly, a dinghy (only bookable from/to Hafendorf Müritz) can help you to go ashore in a relaxed manner.

But why think about all that when you can just relax in a hotel? Quite simply: in a hotel you have one room during your stay and always the same view, whereas on a houseboat you have considerably more space – after all, it consists of one or more sleeping cabins, a saloon, a kitchenette and a bathroom. This gives your dog enough freedom of movement during your vacation.

Of course, there are also certain requirements that must be met for a houseboat vacation with a dog. On the one hand, these are general guidelines for traveling with a dog:

  • Chip identification and EU pet passport
  • Proof of vaccination with valid rabies vaccination
  • valid dog liability insurance (recommended).

On the other hand, your dog should not be afraid of water for a houseboat vacation and should have basic swimming skills. If you have already been on board a ship with your pet and realized that your four-legged friend is not the most seaworthy companion, you should think about booking one of our apartments in Hafendorf Müritz so that you can actually enjoy your vacation.

France is a very popular tourist destination – and rightly so for dog owners, as the entry regulations are quite relaxed. In general, you must observe the same key points that apply when traveling within Germany:

  • Chip identification and EU pet passport
  • Proof of vaccination with valid rabies vaccination
  • valid dog liability insurance (recommended).

However, certain dog breeds (e.g. Rottweilers) are only allowed to enter the country under certain conditions . You also have the option of booking apartments in Niderviller if your dog is not seaworthy.

Why exactly should you choose us as your houseboat charter company? With us, you are choosing a company with more than 30 years of experience in the boat rental sector. Since then, we have been constantly expanding our fleet and adapting it for a dog-friendly vacation.

There are no steps in our Febomobiles, so your animal companions can move freely on board without any obstacles. Even on our Aquino and Kormoran models, only small steps connect the different spaces, which is easy on your pets’ joints.

If you would like to board with more than one dog, this is not a problem, as we also welcome two or more dogs on board. In this case, we advise you to choose one of the larger boats so that there is enough space for people and dogs. Another reason for a houseboat vacation with a dog at KUHNLE-TOURS is that we only charge you a one-time fee of 70,- €/pet. This is regarded as compensation for time-consuming final cleaning.

To make it easier for your dog to get used to his temporary new home, give him enough time to take a close look – or in this case a sniff – at the boat. As usual, set up a cozy place for him to sleep in the lounge or in one of the cabins – preferably with his basket and favorite toys from home so that everything doesn’t smell new and strange. Of course, a treat here and there doesn’t hurt to create a feel-good atmosphere for your dog on the houseboat.

Although you are on vacation, try to stick to the walking and feeding times from your everyday life, because your dog also has a fixed daily rhythm. Avoid changing your pet’s food – especially if your pet is a gourmet. You don’t want to miss out on your favorite food on vacation.

  • EU pet passport
  • Proof of vaccination
  • Dog liability insurance
  • Dog food (at best the same as at home)
  • Favorite treats
  • Food and water bowls
  • Sleeping blanket/basket
  • Favorite toys (at best additional floating toys for extra bathing fun)
  • Dog towel
  • Brush for coat care
  • First-aid kit for dogs (available online, otherwise: gauze bandages, fixation plasters, elastic bandages, blunt scissors, tweezers, clinical thermometer, tick tweezers, …)
  • Life jacket for dogs
  • Dog waste bags
  • Muzzle (depending on dog breed)
  • Linen

If, contrary to our expectations, your dog should get injured, we have put together a list of vets/clinics near the charter stations:
